help-anna-leibenko.org real or fake?

1. After hearing about this through a facebook event invite (https://www.facebook.com/events/519643004727769/519745334717536)

2. I did my preliminary research on the topic by simple google search for her name
(https://www.google.ca/search?q=anna+leibenko)

3. Top results show link to a ferrari forum (just a fan run forum not associated with the car company itself)

Rally To Save A Life: All The Help Is Needed.
http://help-anna-leibenko.org/
So some of you guys here know me personally and some just through other people but today I was given some devastating news. A really close friend of mine whom I've known since she was 12 years old and know her family as well had a very tragic accident on August 17. She fell of the Catamaran she was on in Croatia while she was vacationing and smacked her head. Now she has been in a coma for 4 days so far and I just got off the phone with her brother and he is saying she literally has 15 days to be treated there before they can transport her to Toronto General. The family isn't wealthy and she didn't have insurance. I'm going to put together a charity event to raise as much money we can as possible to transport her back. So far we have raised $10,000.00 just through local friends. We need around a total of $75,000.00 as a new transport company has given us a better price. If anyone has any ideas on how we can do this I'd love the help. I was thinking we do two days of selling drives in our cars for $100-$200 each?? That should raise a decent amount if everyone brings their rides out. Guys we do rides all the time....let's try to save this girls life. I've known her for over a decade, she's a totally sweet girl. Any input, help, advice would be appreciated!!

The following posts were generally how to raise money using car meets and bikini car washes (sound fun) but the responses were negative towards the original poster as it appears he/she is not very liked on those community forums for talking about being wealthy and simply not providing the money asked (i.e. "75k should be little to one with this wealth..." in the comments)

4. Next I decided to do a quick who.is on the domain provided help-anna-leibenko.org which shows the following:

8. Other results show that this girl is a model here: http://www.modelkarma.com/2003
yet an interesting detail shows from google image search which indicates that the images posted on the site are less than 24 hours old:

9. And her only profile exists on this site: http://www.odnoklassniki.ru/profile/265618925318
Shows in the profile she attended Fisherville Junior High School 2000—2002
Which is close to the other places of business or residence mentioned in this document , in the North York, Toronto area.

11. Looking even further there's an ad here:
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-community-volunteers-HELP-SAVE-ANNA-LEIBENKOS-LIFE-W0QQAdIdZ406493455

12. it's a free advertising site but it appears as a paid ad because of the highlighting and link on the right side pointing to http://www.indiegogo.com/annaleibenko (a crowed sourced funding site) with a goal of over 90k, currently at about 300 at the time of this writing. Further information could be found on the indiegogo website as the creator of the campaign.

13. Looking at the "Poster's other ads" shows another ad from the same user for an ipad 2 for sale for $700 with a cell phone and location provided (Concord, ON ..., Canada) the ad reads:

Brand new in the box  Ipad 2 Wi-Fi 3G 64GB Black.
14. A further investigation of the phone number (https://www.google.ca/search?q=647-....) found us a related location at http://www.tradekey.com/profile_contact/uid/3586058/Maluno-Group.htm

Thornhill and Concord are all near by and close to North York as well as the name of the creator of indiegogo campaign.

15. Finally there's more websites such as these: http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/ykbpe/a_canadian_girl_is_clinging_for_life_horrible/
http://toronto-ru.livejournal.com/2858635.html
http://hashonomy.com/link/help-anna-leibenko-485639/

And many more facebook and vk (Russian social networks) links all over slathered with the links to help-anna-leibenko.org

Leads me to believe they are trying to send this viral but the question still remains is it real?

UPDATE Aug 24, 2012: It is now clear this is real and it indeed went viral, from all local Toronto news paper and news media, TV, Radio, etc to nationwide to worldwide from Calgary to UK this has been covered and asking for donations is still very much active. There are now over 40 thousand results on google when typing her name. They have already raised over $130K and still going.
So with this there's still not much update on her condition from either facebook nor other sources but I would assume this many media would make sure this is real. (still unclear how it indeed was verified) but moving along even with all this if the lie still persists it would be one incredible story. Assuming all is true there is still much to be contested in this, as was said about why this one girl that made so many mistakes in her life, not knowing her personally I can say she was not friendly to people around her that wanted to be friends with her but regardless of this, the goodwill of people to donate because this girl is attractive is simply astounding. This is the only truth so far and it remains as such. I'll try to keep you posted if this continues to interest me (or you. comment below!)

UPDATE Nov 2014: There is now a sunnybrook hospital journal article about her, have a look.
http://www.myvirtualpaper.com/doc/sunnybrook-hsc/report-to-donors-2012-2013/2013070810/25.html#24

It reads:

Anna Leibenko was stranded on life support in Croatia last summer after she slipped off a three-metre-high catamaran, hitting her head on the ledge and plunging into the Adriatic Seas unconsciously. Today the 24-year-old former Toronto Argos cheerleader is continuing her miraculous recovery in rehab but has no memory of the accident. Her brother, Artem Leibenko, recalls how Sunnybrook came to Anna's rescue: it was 3 a.m. when our mother got the call from Croatia. It was from one of Anna's friends; they were travelling together on a month-long vacation.

They said not to worry, but later, an English-speaking doctor from Split, Croatia told me she suffered multiple head and facial fractures, concussions, internal brain bleeding, and was in a coma with a broken nose. I was shocked.

Anna didn't have travel insurance. We made a public plea to raise money to cover her massive health-care bills and a $93,550 fee to transport her home by air ambulance. Thanks to everyone who helped, she arrived at Sunnybrook in early September. I couldn't bear to see her hooked up to a machine. It was heartbreaking. Anna remained in a comma at Sunnybrook. Doctors didn't know if she was going to wake up. After two weeks, she was taken off the ventilator and she opened her eyes. We didn't know if she was responsive. She was just lying there, wasn't talking. When she did speak at first, it was gibberish. But soon, my sister was talking again, telling me plans for once she got out of the hospital.

Sunnybrook specialized in trauma and we are so grateful for the excellent care she received here. She can now keep a normal conversation. She's happy - and most importantly, she's still in our lives.

So overall a heartfelt story, but I stick with my points below.

------------------------ back to original writing ---------------------------

My thoughts:
There is plenty of promotion and discussion with requests for money all over the web for this but very little reliable, real information to the actual events, if any.
There's also much confusion and inconsistency of the prices and goals that are trying to be raised and reason for raising it.

We keep hearing that "she didn't buy insurance" but normally countries will perform the operations to save one's life and there's no need to "helicopter" a person over seas since this is a much slower method of transportation than simply taking a plane. The first world countries will heal the person and once they are able to leave the hospital they will take an air-plane back to their home country safely.

What's further confusing is the recent promotion of images and urgency of the situation, with the amount of money and effort put forth they could have already paid those goals.

And I don't want to sound harsh but she was the one that didn't get insurance and SHE must pay the price. That's how our world works.

There's thousands of people dying every day from starvation and yet we try to heal a girl that made mistakes over and over again, from not getting insurance to the falling off a 3 foot catamaran (or whatever) while the less fortunate had no say or choice in the matter of their fate.

Your thoughts:
Do you think it's real? do you have any information?
Should anyone even consider donating?

Please post any thoughts in the comments below.
